Today I write based on my experience as a guide to a summer intern who worked with us..the many things that i noticed in him were - his natural flair for culling down data, being detail oriented, patient, persistent and polite in every transaction he came across...one may wonder why these traits are special or any different from the traits one has especially from a background in the Service industry and when one is pursuing an MBA from a popular B- School.
I have come across many a B-School student or aspirant who has been told aggression is the mantra for you to fasttrack in todays corporate world but i beg to differ. The above traits that i noticed and constantly try to improve upon are still the traits that would help an individual become more effective at work. One has to have a grip on the situation that he/she exists in, knowing the industry one belongs to and being able to borrow from varied industries will happen only when one has an inclination to love information - to slice and dice it into various segments and look at it from a cube or multi dimensional view, this information wouldnt be useful if one does not pay attention or tempers oneself to persisit his or her efforts in knowing more and more...coupling persistence with patience is like chocolate mousse a delectable combination which makes one ask for more...Being polite is like serving the same chocolate mousse in crockery that is customised to the individuals taste, the experience would become special and long cherished..
What I see today is on the contrary, within a year's time many of my friends and colleagues are restless they feel the job that they do isnt valuing their education of a premier league MBA, but the question is have they tried to make their work valuable or worthy of their education? If system theory were applied here it would be looking at a perspective which is the other way around.
Aggression becomes coupled with impatience and we see many individuals floating their profiles in the need to confirm to their self exalted and self hyped impression of where they are supposed to be w.r.t their careers as against where they seem to be. This may end up creating imbalances not only at an individual level but also at an industry level.
However, this write up is just an observation on behavioral aspirations and is definitely not prescriptive. All i would want to say is wish people like the intern gon si fa che - which only means wish you good fortune and prosperity :)
